What is a Magnet Hospital?

magnet hospital

At CareerKnacks we are excited to place a number of the nurses that we bring to the United States in a Magnet Hospital. What is a Magnet Hospital? A hospital that has achieved Magnet Designation is a hospital that has been recognized and awarded for outstanding quality of care for its patients. The Magnet Designation is the highest ranking award that a hospital can receive. The Magnet Recognition Program was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, with only 6% of hospitals in the nation have been awarded Magnet Designation. The status of “Magnet Hospital” can be used as a benchmark for potential patients and employees alike. Patients checking into a Magnet hospital can rest assured that they will receive the best quality of care, and nurses taking jobs at a Magnet Hospital are entering into a work environment where they will be encouraged to flourish and sharpen their skills as professionals. Nurses working at Magnet Hospitals have reported higher rates of job satisfaction.

According to the UC Davis Medical Center, here are some of the benefits that come with being a nurse at a Magnet Hospital:

Benefits for Nurses Working at a Magnet Hospital:

  • A culture that focuses on improving patient outcomes
  • Professional growth and development by educational opportunities and support
  • A structure that encourages decision making at the bedside over clinical issues
  • High job satisfaction
  • An environment that recognizes and rewards competence
  • Low turnover and vacancy rates
  • Focus on professional autonomy
  • Enhances interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Professional growth opportunities
  • Leadership opportunities
  • Opportunity to practice professional nursing with strong interdisciplinary teamwork that supports autonomous practice of nursing
  • A culture that supports you to be the best nurse you can be

For more information on the Magnet Designation and what it means to be a Magnet Hospital check out this FAQ page on the UC Davis Medical Center’s website.

What Impact Will Each Presidential Candidate Have on Immigration

What Impact Will Each Presidential Candidate Have on Immigration

With the rising demand for RNs in America, a topic of concern for those considering a move to the U.S. to take a job in the nursing industry. In an election year, there is always a spotlight on the candidates’ immigration platform. We decided to break it down for each Presidential candidate, and what their platform says about their stance on immigration.

Hillary Clinton

The immigration plan for Hillary Clinton’s platform is the most accepting of immigrants who want to come and/or stay in the country. Her plan includes:

1 – Introduce comprehensive immigration reform

2 – End the three- and 10-year bars.

3 – Defend President Obama’s executive actions—known as DACA and DAPA—against partisan attacks.

4 – Do everything possible under the law to protect families.

5 – Enforce immigration laws humanely.

6 – End family detention and close private immigration detention centers.

7 – Expand access to affordable health care to all families.

8 – Promote naturalization.

Donald Trump

The immigration plan for Donald Trump is based on three principals:

1. A nation without borders is not a nation. There must be a wall across the southern border.

2. A nation without laws is not a nation. Laws passed in accordance with our Constitutional system of government must be enforced.

3. A nation that does not serve its own citizens is not a nation. Any immigration plan must improve jobs, wages and security for all Americans.

Other key factors include: enhanced penalties for overstaying a visa, mandatory return of all criminal aliens, increase number of ICE officers, make Mexico pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Compare the Cost of Living in New Orleans to Your Home City

Compare the Cost of Living in New Orleans to Your Home City

Moving to a new city, let alone a new country, can be overwhelming. There are so many different factors to consider when determining if a new place will be a good fit for you and your family. One big consideration is the cost of living. How does it compare to your current city? How does your salary compare to your current salary? Will you be able to afford a similar lifestyle to which you are accustomed? Expatistan offers a cost of living calculator which compares cities all over the world for just this reason. We decided to do a little roundup of some popular cities in compared to New Orleans. This shows the cost of living index on the righthand side. Basically the higher the number, the more expensive the city. The number on the left is the ranking among other cities. So London is considered the 7th most expensive city in the world, while New Orleans is all the way down at number 63. While these numbers are helpful in giving us a general idea of how expensive a city is, considering what your new salary will be compared to what your current salary is, is also very important.

Nearly 1.1 Million Registered Nurses Needed by 2024 in the US

As we have been predicting, the latest projections Bureau of Labor Statistics estimate that there will be nearly 1.1 million job openings for registered nurses in the United States. Since we know that the educational system in the US cannot possibly keep up with this demand, along with so many nurses retiring during this time period, the need for international nurses has never been higher.

Also check out our NCLEX Timeline, H-1b Visa Timeline, and our Licensing Assistance Program for more information on becoming a nurse in the US.
