When moving to a new country it is nearly impossible to prepare yourself for every change you will encounter in your new home, no matter how much research you do. But when you type coffee culture into Google, there is a good reason why there are full websites dedicated to the topic. Americans are serious about their coffee. And we aren’t just talking about a hot cup of jo here. Coffee fanatics consider the roast, the body, and the preparation in order to concoct their perfect cup. Many have even taken to roasting their own coffee beans to get the flavor just right.
So what exactly is coffee culture? Well, in technical terms it is described as a social atmosphere or series of associated social behaviors that depends heavily upon coffee, particularly as a social lubricant. The term also refers to the diffusion and adoption of coffee as a widely consumed stimulant by a culture. Which is just a fancy way of saying that coffee is a way to bring people together. That’s an idea we are happy to support!
So to prepare our CareerKnacks nurses for the coffee obsession they will witness when they land in America, we thought we would share a little bit about the history of coffee, how it changed America and created its own culture.
But for all you tea lovers out there, don’t worry, America can do tea pretty well, too! With tea menus spanning several pages at local tea shops.
