With stress at least partially credited with dozens of illnesses, it is no surprise that the American Nurses Association has made this a point of focus with their Year of the Healthy Nurse campaign. Stress is one of the most difficult issues nurses face in the workplace and can be difficult to leave at work when you head home every day. Finding ways to relieve, if not avoid unnecessary stress is critical to maintaining optimal health and is the focus for our April health post.

The American Nurses Association has declared 2017 the Year of the Healthy Nurse, and we are jumping on board to help promote it. For 2017, there is a big emphasis on keeping our nurses healthy and we couldn’t be happier to get on board. The American Nurses Association is championing this effort in more ways than one, and their Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation initiative is the perfect way to do just that. They offer numerous resources for nurses to stay healthy and fit, regardless of what needs they may have. Here are a few words straight from the ANA:

“ANA defines a healthy nurse as one who actively focuses on creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, personal and professional well-being. A healthy nurse lives life to the fullest capacity, across the wellness/illness continuum, as they become stronger role models, advocates, and educators, personally, for their families, their communities and work environments, and ultimately for their patients. Since February is cardiovascular health, we are sharing five ways to put this into action right now.

  1. Limit the amount of added sugar in your diet.
  2. Wear a health tracker and aim to get at least 10,000 steps per day.
  3. If you smoke, start a program that will help you quit.
  4. Get adequate (and quality!) sleep.
  5. Start tracking the amount of sodium in your diet. Follow your doctor’s recommendation for how much you should have.
